and fined RM700 by the magistrate’s court after admitting to the offence today. Mohd Paizal Japar, 27, was charged with stealing a RM380 electronic cigarette belonging to Abdul Samad Abdul Kadir, 18. The accused, who was unrepresented, committed the offence at a convenience store next to a Western Union outlet at Pasar Seni on Jalan Kasturi here on Sept 10 at 10.55am. His charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, upon conviction. Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahid who meted the sentence ordered for the accused’s jail term to run from today. In pleading leniency, Mohd Paizal said he was drunk at the time of the incident and was not in control of his actions. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Zikri Jaafar urged for a deterrent sentence, saying that the sentence must serve as a lesson to the accused.
