Should Vaping Be Allowed In The Workplace?

We’re more aware than ever of the health risks we take whenever we light up a cigarette, which is why more and more people are doing what they can to kick the habit. The E-Cig Review site have said; there have always been different methods available to people who want to quit smoking, but over recent years vaping has definitely increased in popularity.

Not only has vaping become the cool thing to do, it’s actually a very practical and reliable way to give up smoking. Although cigarettes are packed full of harmful chemicals and toxins but it’s the nicotine that gets us hooked and makes us want more. Vaping allows users to get the nicotine hit we desire so much, without the toxic bits going into our body.

Smoking in the Workplace

We all know that smoking in public buildings is banned and this includes in the workplace. Although there are often smoking areas outside of the office, many people miss being able to smoke without going outside into the cold. It’s for this reason many workplace managers have introduced different policies regarding vaping while at work.

There are really divided opinions regarding smoking while at work. Most people who are smokers have to pop out and get their nicotine hit a few times a day which means that they’re often taking unofficial breaks. This can lead to an ill feeling amongst work people because those who don’t smoke can be left feeling as though they’re working longer than others, especially when you add up these unofficial breaks over a longer period of time. 5 minutes doesn’t seem like a long time but when you think that could be twice a day – that’s over 40 hours a year; it soon adds up!

Vaping

From an employer’s point of view, allowing vaping at a desk could be really positive. After all, they don’t want to be paying employees over 40 hours a year of non-productive time. By saving their employees a trip outside they could mean they get these lost minutes back. The problem is that studies show that almost two-thirds of respondents would feel annoyed if someone vaped at their desk, so it would be a matter of trying to do what you can to keep everyone happy.
We all know that vaping is less harmful than traditional smoking so you could wonder why employees would be so against the idea. However when asked many people said that the smoke it would create would be a distraction – especially if a number of their colleagues were all to vape at the same time.

That said, according to the survey by the E Cigarette Review site 76% feel that cigarette smokers should not be allowed extra ‘vape breaks’  so it’s hard to know what to do for the best to keep everyone happy. Of course, the creation of a separate area could help but that would be defeating the object – because smokers could just continue smoking in the areas they use now.

So, Should It Be Allowed?

A lot of the time, it isn’t a black and white answer. It depends a lot on the workplace and who works there. We all know that vaping in the workplace isn’t illegal, but it is about keeping everyone happy. Yes, you could ban it for everyone but if a majority of the employees would want to allow vaping then you’re not going to be doing yourself any favors.

Really what you need to do is work out what is going to work out best for you and your workplace. The truth is that every workplace is different – you’re in the best position to decide what is going to work best. One thing you can be certain of is that you need to make sure there are set guidelines and that everyone knows what they are doing. Make sure you include all the relevant information in the employee handbook for example, so that there is no confusion about what is and isn’t allow when it comes to smoking and vaping in the workplace.

Ultimately the decision is yours, and there are pros and cons for both sides of the argument. However, what you probably should do is speak to the workforce and get some opinions about what people want. That way you can go with the majority and make sure that you keep as many people happy as possible.
